Matisse's French Coat
"I want to know the woman in that coat."
Graubunden lights in Davos December night.
Top Hat affair winding down.
Dignitaries, celebrities, Swiss citizens (and me) mingle almost seamlessly. I’ve seen her here for three years now. It’s time. I bump her at the crowded coat check. “Oh, excuse me. I thought that was my coat.”
“Really?” Her English impeccable (but clearly French).
I hand her the coat from the counter, admiring its soft wool blend and unique velvety black cotton trims.
“A man would wear a coat like this, Mr…?”
“Peterman. Sure, a Parisian man after a few drinks, right?”
As we walk the snowy cobblestone lined in topiary boxwoods, we engage in passionate debates about art, color and Matisse, revealing to me her worldly energy and reminding me you can sometimes judge a book by its cover.
Matisse’s French Coat (No. 3987). Timeless Parisian style trimmed with black velvet cotton on collar, side seams and cuffs. Three cream-colored buttons hidden under center front placket. Shoulder pads and side panel pocket. Below knee length. Imported.
