The story of this dress starts somewhere west of Anghiari, hours after I set off for elsewhere. I’d turned right instead of left at the crossroads, and there I was in front of an arched wooden door. Dusty, thirsty, but not exactly annoyed.

I knock twice.
“Come posso aiutarla?” The dark-haired proprietress appears, bookmarking Vittorini something or other with the index finger of one hand, waving away a bee with the other.
I’m well and truly lost, and I tell her as much.
Some kind of inborn Italian hospitality takes over and before long, I’m settled into the spare room over the kitchen, and Signora Cattaneo directs me to join her family for dinner in two hours.
