I’ll never forget the first time that couple docked. They came screaming into the marina in a snappy little Bayliner. Him at the wheel, her alongside in that striped-above-the-waist navy dress—she fashions herself a sailor,I thought.
The wind whipped the material around her form while she hugged against him at the helm. They careened across the low-wake zone, to my chagrin, and bounced into the pier.
Months later, she pulls up in a mahogany-paneled cabin cruiser. As she breaches the basin, I’m silenced by her technique—smooth, relaxed, measured. Far less wake than last time, with him at the wheel.
She has on the same dress, but this time bright green. It rolls in the breeze to the tune of the boat’s motor. She glides alongside the pier and disembarks, alone.
“What about your fella?” I ask.
“Oh, I left him in Río.”
