The Heroine's Dress
Final scene. The heroine wears this dress.
Auburn curls tumble loose and wild onto her bare shoulders. The hem of her dress dances with the wind.
In one pocket (any real-deal heroine needs pockets), she presses the priceless 1681 Spanish doubloon into her palm.
She turns toward the far horizon, toward Lochcarron. The music swells—one fiddle, then two—as she leaves us.
We practically jump out of our seats to follow. We watched her vanquish the band of robbers with just a dagger and her wits. We applauded her toughness. We becameher for a moment when she closed her eyes for a kiss.
And so, we ache, unreasonably, extravagantly, and we follow as far as we can.
Until the house lights come up.
Tomorrow, we’ll think of her.
