STORY

The Lady in Seat 1A.

Only Virginie Amégrave;lie Avegno Gautreau (and maybe John Singer Sargent) could understand the ramifications of something so deliciously subtle, so scandalously subtracted.

In the 1884 masterpiece portrait of Gautreau entitled Madame X, a single shoulder strap appeared to be missing (dangling down her arm actually). Paris nearly burned from the scandal while Sargent, the artist, was run out of town.

It wasn't as if the Parisians were afraid of showing a little skin (they've forgotten more nudity than you and I will ever see). No, it was the dress that scandalized. The idea of something missing. It's what the subtle subtraction says about high society, forcing them to look into the mirror and confront what lies beneath.

Can those who dwell in decency and prosperity also be sexual?

Can mischief be sophisticated?

The lady in seat 1A has some interesting thoughts on the matter.

Cut-Out Neckline Dress (No. 5569). 100% silk crepe de chine. Sensual mock neck with plunging cut-out. Princess seams. Mid-calf length. Body is lined. Center back zipper with hook & eye closure. Imported.
