White Collar Velvet Dress
Ice Cream, Please.
Some British children born at the start of the Second World War had no idea what ice cream was or that such a scrumptious concoction even existed. What did they get instead? A carrot on a stick, of course.
Sugar, eggs, and butter were all severely rationed during this time. This could be why nanny’s attic is full of stuffy ol’ velvet—she never got to have ice cream. All those carrots did, however, give her eyes like a hawk. And boy does she use them scrupulously.
Seeing you in this dress, she’s completely flummoxed. That collar? The silk georgette? Is that a satin ribbon bow? Why are you showing so much arm? This isn’t proper evening velvet. It’s far too demure and girly. Mischievous. Incorrigible, even.
Did you have your carrots this evening?
No, Nanny. Tonight, I’ll be having the ice cream.
