STORY

“All Men Are Equal Before Fish.”

Herbert Hoover said this, probably after bearing the brunt of the Great Depression, some questionable tariffs, and that whole prohibition debacle. But he had a point.

When two men are running from a grizzly, the last thing that matters is their portfolios or what kind of Brazilian hardwood they chose for the mud room. But it might matter what kind of bag they’re carrying.

We found this 1930s French hunting and fishing bag in Paris. You can rough it in the wild then carry back your fish or small game in the mesh pocket so that the interior doesn’t get messy.

If your hunting grounds are urban in nature, the netting pocket can be used to store your quick-access items such as keys, a phone, or a tablet. The downside is that if you’re being chased by a bear, the fish you caught could be used to distract him, but he doesn’t care about your tablet.

1930s French Hunting & Fishing Bag (No. 5751). Made from substantial, lustrous leather. Mesh exterior netting pocket remains covered when flap is down. Adjustable shoulder strap with two internal compartments that close with a series of buckles and straps. Made in India.

Dimensions: 14 1/2” W x 12 1/2” H x 12” D (Front flap is 16 1/2” x 16 12”, strap is 36” long).
