Garamond Font Letters

No. N1412

Garamond Font Letters.

Garamond is the name given to a group of old-style serif typefaces named after the punch-cutter Claude Garamond (c. 1480-1561).

GARAMOND is considered to be among the most legible and readable serif typefaces for use in print (offline) applications. Used in Dr Seuss books, Harry Potter books, even Apple in 1984 upon release of Macintosh.

Pub letters have been in use for only for about 100 years; prior to that letters were painted on boards or classic pictorial signs were used. Earliest letters were made of wood, occasionally brass or bronze. The latter are rare; the wooden ones are long gone.

From the late 30’s onwards pubs and inns began to use letters to supplement their pictorial signs. In the 60’s it became easy to mold resin into letter forms, and though other materials were experimented with including acrylic, Foamex, reconstituted wood and metal, resin has been the much more widely used.

Pubs trying to create a warm, inviting and opulent interior had to create that feeling on the outside.

Stained and cut glass windows were installed as well as huge gilded letters, finished in 24kt gold leaf as this never tarnished and retained its brilliance.
