Small Brass Jam Pan
All heavy spun brass, mainly with hand forged steel handles applied to the body with copper rivets. 100 years ago every housewife made jams and jellies as it was the only way to preserve summer fruit. The brass does react to acidic substances so they weren't used for pickles and chutneys and rarely for ordinary cooking. Apparently, the jam leeches a little of the copper out of the alloy during cooking and this helped prevent mold. The family was usually sent out into lanes and fields to pick the fruit, blackberries and bilberries even rose hips. Most fruit has lots of vitamin C, particularly rose hips which were made into jelly and spoon fed to babies and infants. All these have been cleaned and polished including vapor blasted inside so are ready for cooking. Vapor blasting is similar to shot blasting but uses water under such high pressure it vaporizes, clean and safe. Sadly, WWII rationing of sugar and freezers made most redundant but they will also make good log pots, fruit bowls or plant holders too. Truly, a rare find.
