LC Cotton Twill Pants
Reading the Tea Leaves.
In 1679, the first London tea auction took place at the East India House on Leadenhall Street. Back then, each lot of tea was sold by an inch of candle, which means that the hammer would fall when an inch of candle expired. The bidding was furious, and the fact that the flame would flicker before extinguishing only added to the frenzy. If you think the floor of the stock exchange is intense…
While taking a respite at a tea shop in Lewes, England, I overhear a man wearing a mesmerizing, but clearly aged, green suit, asking the manager for his best Darjeeling. They recognize one another from the London tea auctions years ago.
The shoulders of the man’s four-button jacket had faded from years of sun, but the color still managed to pop the contrasting caramel buttons brilliantly. He took off the jacket, revealing the wonderful surprise of a vest.
The fact that this man had come for his Darjeeling in a three-piece that he had probably worn to the tea auctions prior to their closing in 1998 prompted me to seek his advice—should I put the milk in before the tea or after (if you don’t know, this is a rather hotly debated subject)?
“Before, of course,” he said. I believed him.
