LC Gerald Murphy Pants
“Living well is the best revenge,” Gerald Murphy said.
I never understood what the man could have to get even about.
He was famously handsome and wealthy. Knew everyone, Picasso to Cole Porter. It was he and his wife Sara who showed F. Scott Fitzgerald exactly how the rich are different from you and me.
That was in the early 1920s, when they invented expat summer on the French Riviera. The Murphys made suntans fashionable. Also, the wearing of berets, striped fishermen’s shirts, espadrilles...and distinctive cotton pants like these.
Gerald Murphy Pants (No. 5673). For the beach and knocking around. Breathable, substantial linen. Comfortable relaxed fit. Anachronistic self-fabric belt with double D-ring closure. A bit of elastic at the sides of the waist for stretch and comfort. Two on-seam side pockets. The single back pocket with flap and corozo button closure adds even more cavalier pa-nache. Made in India.
*Life Is Unfair Dept.: At age 33, Gerald Murphy thought he’d try his hand at painting, immediately produced what critics call “some of the most original and authoritative modern pictures by an American of his generation.”
