Shirt of a Different Stripe.

I was having lunch at a portside restaurant on the Basque coast.

Timothy, the owner is wearing this shirt. It has all the colors of the region, ocher beaches, bright green hills, blue ocean, houses with brightly colored window frames and doors and orangey-red roofs.

Freshly caught hake, and a chilled bottle of a local favorite, Garnacha Blanca. What could be simpler? Or better.

Laughter is loud and everyone is speaking Basque or Spanish, except the owner who is from Ireland.

When I ask him about his shirt, Timothy tells me he opens the restaurant every morning at 5AM to greet the fishermen.

"Well at that hour, it's dark and dreary and this shirt is like a tonic."
