The Shambles.

The Shambles in York is well known as the butcher's street. It was here that the city's butcher's market was located. A plaque there reads: "The Shambles, the ancient street of the butchers of York, mentioned in the Doomsday Book of William the Conqueror." It takes its name from the word "shamel" meaning the stalls or benches on which the meat was displayed. There is a pub in Lutterworth, the market town in the Harborough district of Leicestershire that was formerly a butcher's shop. There is a Shambles pub in Edinburg as well as in Carlisle in Cumbria. This sign likely comes from the town of Chesterfield in North East Derbyshire. This very unusual round sign with the three dimensional figure of the butcher is hand painted on metal, both sides, with a metal frame and rods for hanging.
