Isaac Newton

Isaac Newton. The sign depicts Sir Isaac Newton beneath that famous apple tree. Newton often told the story that he was inspired to formulate his theory of gravitation by watching the fall of an apple from a tree. Cartoons have gone further to suggest the apple actually hit Newton's head, and that its impact somehow made him aware of the force of gravity. This sign in fact shows that apple about to hit his head. We found this sign in a warehouse in Lincolnshire in the northeast of England. Newton was born in Woolsthorpe-by-Colsterworth which is in Lincolnshire, and although we cannot definitively say where the specific location of this pub or inn is, the probability is somewhere near Sir Isaac Newton's home of Woolsthorpe Manor in Lincolnshire. Hand-painted on metal, both sides with wood frame. It is signed by the artist, Graham Henderson. One side of the sign shows the effects of the weather, faded but still quite legible.
