Elements Of Design.

Barnett Newman knew the power of a line. Last year his 1961 portrait, Black Fire I, sold for over $84,000,000. It’s a simple, elegant piece.

Vertical lines equate to height, stability and power.

Up and down.

Head to toe.

That’s where you want them looking.

You know this, of course.

The story of this dress is its simple, elemental design. Mechanics that have worked for courtiers (and painters) for centuries. A fit and flare that flows through and narrows the hips creating a silhouette that follows the body’s curves. No waistline. The extended shoulder sleeves are unique and feminine, lengthening one’s neck. Head to toe vertical lines add to your length, making you look $84,000,000 taller.

It isn’t science but it’s close.

It’s art.

The Great Silhouette Dress (No. 3850). In a stretchy rayon blend fabric. Low calf length. Boat neckline. 12 gores in front and back from neckline to hem. Sleeveless. Invisible zipper at center back with hook and eye closure. Fully Lined. Imported.

Love the dress!
I love the cut of this dress! It wears beautifully and I like the fact it has a little weight to it. I don't normally purchase red but I loved the cut so much I thought I would try it. Would love to have it in other colors as well!

Elongates one's figure!
I really love how the many gores in this dress elongate my shape. I'm 5'6 and 144 # 34D. I don't know my waist and hip size, nor do I want to. This dress fits the same as all of my many J Peterman size 12s. It is lower calf length. This dress is a true red and just gorgeous. I don't like to show my flabby arms, so I wear it with the J Peterman red boat neck Tee. The color is nearly identical. The dress is heavy but I like that about it. And the T will allow me to wear it into winter. My daughter likes it so much that I just ordered one for her. (I'll have to hem hers because she is, at 4'11, vertically challenged. I wish J Peterman had petite sizes.)

Nice dress
I really like the way the dress is cut. I think it hangs well. My problem with it is the fabric. The fabric is heavier than I anticipated, thus making the dress heavy. I would like this same style dress in linen or a light cotton. It would also have been nice to have a bolero jacket to wear with it since it is a winter dress.

Polyester?!
You're right, great idea, and the lines are gorgeous. But polyester?! I would buy this dress - but not in polyester.
