Fox & Grapes.

English Pub Sign - Fox & Grapes

Fox & Grapes is an allusion to Aesop's well-known fable. The fox tries to reach a bunch of grapes which he would dearly love to eat, but they are beyond him. He therefore declares that it is of no importance, since the grapes were sour anyway. It was this fable which gave rise to the expression "sour grapes."

Thwaites is the leading brewer from the north of England. Daniel Thwaites first began brewing in Blackburn in 1807. The brewery has remained in his family for over five generations.

This captivating sign with its larger than life fox bears the signature of the artist, Claire Highton, a well known sign and poster artist from Blackburn, Lancashire, coincidentally, also the home of Thwaites.

The sign is hand painted on wood, two sides, with a wooden frame.
