It is understandable that there should be many inns with the name of a tree, for so many in the days gone by, as well as now, had a tree outside the door, which naturally became the sign. The Cherry Tree was the sign of a once famous resort in Bowlinggreen Lane, Clerkenwell, and was adopted on account of the numbers of cherry trees which grew on its grounds. A few lines from a 1608 English ballad: "The carpenters will to the Axe, The colliers will dine at the Sacke, The fruterer he to the Cherry-Tree, Good fellows no liquor will lacke." Hand-painted on metal, both sides, with metal frame.
