“Le Petrin,” antique French dough bin or kneading trough. The trapezoidal shaped box, which closes with a hinged top, was used to proof/rise the bread dough mixture. A kneading trough is a biblical term for the vessel in which dough, after being mixed and leavened, was left to swell or ferment.
