Hard to find smaller size single beam counter scale for the weighing of candies or spice using the Roberval system. A Roberval scale is an equal-arm beam with pans above the beam. The pans are stabilized by a leg and stay underneath the beam. The principle was invented by a French mathematician, Gilles Roberval, in 1669.
The cast iron frame supports brass load and weight plates and a brass weight indicator. The scale is complete with the original five solid brass weights (8oz, 4oz, 2 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz). The weights, collector's items in themselves, have various official stamps on their bases. England, Ca. 1895.
