Single beam counter scale probably used for weighing candies or spice, utilizing the Roberval system. A Roberval scale is an equal-arm beam with the pans above the beam. The pans are stabilized by a leg and stay underneath the beam. The principle was invented by a French mathematician, Gilles Personne de Roberval, in 1669.

W & T Avery Ltd is a British manufacturer of weighing machines. The company was founded in the early 18th century and took the name W & T Avery in 1818. This cast iron scale is embossed "W & T Avery, To Weight 2 lbs." It has brass load and weight pans and comes complete with an original set of three iron weights (1 lb, 8 oz, 4 oz) and two brass weights (2 oz, 1 oz), embossed and incised with the Avery name and with various official stamps on their bases. England, Ca. 1890.
