A rare smaller size single beam counter scale for the weighing of candies or spice using the Roberval system. A Roberval scale is an equal-arm beam with pans above the beam. The pans are stabilized by a leg and stay underneath the beam. The principle was invented by a French mathematician, Gilles Roberval, in 1669.
W & T Avery Ltd is a British manufacturer of weighing machines. The company was founded in the early 18th century and took the name W & T Avery in 1818. This cast iron scale is embossed "Avery Ld, To Weight 1 lb." It has brass load and weight pans and comes complete with an original set of six solid brass weights (8 oz, 4 oz, 2 oz, 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz) with various official stamps on their bases. The weights themselves are collector's items. England, Ca. 1890.
