In the middle of the nineteenth century, when rail mania was at its height, thousands of inns, taverns, and hotels changed signs to be up to date, particularly those close to stations. Consequently, the routes followed by The Great Western Railway also had its inns. The Great Western was created by Act of Parliament on the 31st of August, 1835 to provide a double tracked line from Bristol to London. It was not until June, 1841, that the line was completed at a total cost of £6,500,000. There is a famous Railway Tavern on High Street in Watford, Hertfordshire.
