It was Bertie, the Prince of Wales (King Edward VII later) who first donned the pattern known as glen check, aka Glenurquhart.
So why do we give all the credit to his grandson, Edward VIII, who abdicated the throne to marry Wallis and pursue a life of leisure?
May the world know, Bertie was the first. Always his own man, he would go on to overturn his Queen mother’s ban on cigar smoking as well as many more of her wishes including his royal namesake. Overbearing mothers and cigars? Freud must have had a field day.
Gentlemen, you may smoke.
