Otavalo Mountain Shirt.

What’s so good about this shirt is what it is not.

It’s not this week’s fashion statement.

It’s the real thing: the actual cotton workshirt actually worn by the actual mountain people of Otavalo, Ecuador. For about the past four centuries.

The tiny wrinkles and creases in the fabric guarantee that you will look neither starched nor disheveled. You will look merely at ease.

You will also look just a tiny bit interesting; a little more so for every mile more distant from Otavalo you happen to find yourself.

(A dozen pleats on either side of the four-button front placket, gathers at the back yoke and cuffs. Faintly swashbuckling.)

Men will look broad-shouldered, brave, and secretly kind. Their female friends will encourage them to go without shaving for a few days.

Women will look narrow-waisted, innocent (but with a hint of wildness) when wearing it with trousers. Worn with a soft skirt and a wide belt? That’s another matter entirely. I don't want to spoil the surprise. Imported.

Otavalo Mountain Shirt (No. 1003). For men and women.

Colors: Black, Light Blue, Indigo, Parchment, Natural.

Men's sizes S, M, L, XL, XXL.

Where to begin?
This shirt is no longer the terrific shirt I bought and loved originally over fifteen years ago. It's now made in India, which I could live with, as the last one I bought a few years back was made there. However, Peterman, now you've gone too far. No longer is it a soft, well-draping comfortable gauze, now it's poplin, and hangs entirely differently from the original.

The most comfortable work shirt I have ever owned. Fit, finish and detail are superb. I have been purchasing them for years. Compliments certainly are nice but comfort rules the day. This is the first review I have ever submitted and perhaps the only and last. Fitting because this shirt will be hard to top.

New design
The old Mt. shirt was awesome, they were made in Ecuador. The new model is made in India and is a different cut. Not as good as old model.

Fabric change
Very disappointed when I received my third Otavalo Mtn Shirt. The fabric had been changed to a polished cotton from the wonderful cotton muslin in the other two I already have. It's just not the same shirt...too bad. Wish I had known, I would not have ordered it again.

Paired with flannel shirt - excellent!
I bought my Otavalo Mountain shirt in indigo over a year ago and at first, I didn't like it. I felt I didn't look too great in it and the sleeves weren't long enough. I was using it as a nightshirt or under a robe for a while but not out and about. However, I've found a better use for it! Under a button down flannel shirt. I never had an issue with the material, the material is excellent! Just the fabric I'd like during the summer time by the ocean. But during the winter, it feels great under a button down. I'm even going to buy a second this Christmas season!

Extremely Disappointed!
Two problems: 1) The small is enormous and the sleeves are ridiculously puffy. If I sewed or could affored to have it done, I would have them taken in. 2) I bought the black because parchment was not available. Big mistake! I live in black turtlenecks. but this is tithe blackest-looking black I have ever seen. And since I'm 5'3 and normal weight, the shirt just looks ridiculous on me. I have tride washing it in hot water and drying it on high heat several times, but nothing will tame this shirt. I'm even considering boiling it and trying bleaching it. I'm sure it's great for tall and heavy people, but petites beware, especially of the black. I should probably have returned it, but I've been looking for a loose cotton shirt for years, and thought I had finally found one.

The Fit is Not for Everyone
Might be it is a little too authentic. The fit would be great for someone with a barrel chest and short waist. A farmer from Otavalo maybe? With my long arms and slighter build it just looks blocky and awkward. If you made it to the same proportions as your great Peterman or Gatsby shirts it would be fabulous. As it is I returned it. A pity. Lovely style, material and detailing. The picture of course gives no hint that it so different in cut from other Peterman shirts.

Great Shirt & Service
I ride a motorcycle and am allergic to bee stings so I wear long sleeve shirts and have become enamored with Henley type shirts. This is light and I bought it for summer wear. I believe it will keep the sun off me yet be cool and allow the breeze through. I have already gotten one of the J. Peterman shirts and I like it a lot too but I wear a large in that style so I ordered a large Otavalo mountain Shirt which turned out to be too small. I sent it back and promptly, my XL arrived and could not be happier. The shirt looks to do honorable service, we will know in a few months.

I have two shirts and they are totally awesome. So soft and I get so many complements every time I wear one. They are so comfortable.

Better than I expected
How Mr. P does it at this cost I cant imagine. Worn outside pants or leggings, its great. Tucked into, say, the English trumpet skirt, its a different story, a more intriguing one. Year-round wear here in the South. So well-made I almost dont want to wash it. I need more colors, its so versatile, and, fortunately, Mr. P offers them.

Softest Shirt Ever
I just received this in the mail and love it. The softness is amazing, it is super comfortable, and I cannot wait to wear it! Glad to know that people still care about making beautifully constructed and designed clothing in this highly mechanized world we live in!

Great shirt! Ive been buying it for years, in all colors available. Wonderful with jeans, under jumpers, with skirts. Once, in a pinch, as a nightshirt! Easy to pack. Durable. and just plain great.

LOVE This Shirt!
I ordered the Blue Chambray in M-XL. It gets softer with every wash, could not be more comfortable when paired with leggings, and most importantly, offers Excellent rear coverage!
