A distinctive Panetiere or bread storage box from France, typical of the Provence region where they were often found on the kitchen walls of wealthier homes hanging over a Petrin or kneading trough. They were used for the storage and drying of bread; hence the open sides and bottom allowing maximum ventilation while also protecting the food from domestic animals.
