Antique French shop or counter scale in hard-to-find small size originally used for pastries. It uses the Roberval system, an equal arm beam scale with pans above the beam. The pans are stabilized by a leg and stay underneath the beam. The principle was invented by a French mathematician, Gilles Personne, in 1669. The scale is embossed: PORTEE MAX 1 KILO, and has verification (inspector’s) stamps on the base. Brass weight and load plates on cast iron base. Ca. 1890. One-Kilo scale (C760).
