Long Sleeve 1947 Dress.

The most flattering dress of the 20th century.

Full, sweeping skirt and shaped bodice, for artful emphasis on legs, hips, waist, and bust.

Rita wore it. Coeds and secretaries wore it. Your mother wore it. Women looked wonderful in it. Still do. And always will.

Unless the female form undergoes some kind of radical transformation.

Long-Sleeve 1947 Dress (No. 1732). Deliverance from the boxy, skimpy cut of WWII utility fashions. Pure cotton with the same swinging sweep and sash ties as the short-sleeved version. Same V-neck bodice, darts at bust and waist. Same notched collar to stand up pertly, if you wish.

This one definitely belongs in your closet too. Imported.

Women’s sizes: 0 through 20.

Colors: Purple Plaid Flannel, Yellow Plaid Flannel.

Love, love, love this dress!
I knew it was a keeper the moment I took it out of the box. Classic, elegant and perfect for just about any occasion. (OK, maybe not fly fishing, but...) I am very impatient for one in black.....hint, hint, Mr. Peterman.

Classic, flattering shirtdress, very versatile
I own a few of these, and they don't disappoint. Nice tailoring and quality. Versatile to dress up or down. I bought the bright pink color. I'd buy the blue, too, if not for the fact that I already bought one in this color last year. I recommend that, too. I love the simple, color-matched buttons. JP makes another shirtwaist style that has (what I think are) over-designed cushion-dome, fabric-covered buttons. I'm so much happier with these buttons. To note: the waist hits high on me, i.e. I am long-waisted, and this is more short-waisted. Still, if I tie the sash, the off-fit works for me. The only other comment: the skirt is very long. I'm 5'4, and it's almost to the ankles. I like a below-the-knee length, but this is a bit too much, and I always have it shorted. I taller woman would love it, but I wonder about the fit since, as noted above, it's rather short-waisted.

Too small, too prone to wrinkle
The dress looks fabulous in the sketch, but the cotton fabric wrinkles easily and is the sort that when you put an iron on it, it will probably leave a mark on thick parts I know this because when I removed the dress from the plastic, I saw the hem had such marks at the folds where I suppose the staff had ironed it. In addition it was a small size 12 and a bit short-waisted, even for me. Too bad. I really, really wanted this dress. But I am returning it.

Ironing and dry cleaners
I love the style and until it wrinkles or needs washing, it looks flattering. I stopped buying this dress whenever I saw a color or pattern I liked. Dry cleaners say it is a pain to iron, charge a hefty premium or refuse to take the item. Would it hurt to have a blended fabric!?

I bought this dress in November. I get many compliments whenever I wear it. I would buy several in different colours.

Wonderful Dress.
I love this dress because: it's the perfect length, doesn't gap at the bust (huge problem for me, no pun intended), is very comfortable, and has pockets. The perfect dress. I get a ton of compliments on it every time I wear it, and I feel incredibly elegant.

Gorgeous slimming dress in a nice material
I am thrilled with this dress. (For reference I am 5'3 -weigh 134 and purchased the size 12). This dress fit like it was made for me. I absolutely love the fact that the material is warm, like a flannel mens shirt, and also very flattering in design. I can hardly wait to wear this as soon as it gets a bit colder out. If it comes back in the blue, I will definitely get it too.

Great Fall and Winter Dress!
Took a chance and ordered this dress in the red/black color. When I received it, I tried it on and it fit perfectly...glad I sized up to a size 12 because the top of the dress is very fitted, and suits those who are short in the waist, as noted by another reviewer. The fabric is a thick cotton flannel, sure to keep you warm during the Fall and Winter months. Also, it washes very well, put it on cold delicate cycle, a few minutes in the dryer, and then let it air dry. Dress has nice deep side pockets and a fabric belt. Not too crazy about the fabric belt but you can add your own belt to this, even a black conch belt would look great and give it a western vibe. Overall good purchase :)

Mismatched Plaid
J Peterman's 1947 Dress is, hands-down, my favorite dress in the world. Like another reviewer mentioned, it's perfect for us short waisted women because it defines our middle. Furthermore, the classic style can be adapted to suit many occasions. I own a two of these dresses in cotton, and one in corduroy. I was , therefore, quite excited to try the plaid - then terribly disappointed when it arrived. The plaid pattern in the skirt of the dress I received was nowhere close to lining up. Having sewn a garment or two or two in my time, I understand that correctly matching plaid 'wastes' yardage, thus makes a garment more expensive. While a mismatch is to be expected in plaid clothes from other, lesser retailers, I was quite dismayed to witness it in a garment from J Peterman. The dress was returned. Time and the cost postage were both wasted.

Loveliness at Its Finest
Okay. . . .it's b-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l! Undeniably and incontrovertibly. But know ye this!!!! I am 5'6, 130lbs., a 30 waist and a 40D bust. Make no mistake! This is a VERY form-fitting dress and I wear a size16! It's perfect for a short-waisted woman. If you're long-waisted. . . .forget it! And if you're busty. . . .err on this side of getting a size BIGGER than you think. I own THREE of these dresses the red/black checked, the blue/black checked, and the beige/black checked. I'd own the green/black checked, too, but they got sold out! And the checked pattern is a flannel make so. . . .in the WINTER!!! they're the absolute BEST! Yummy warm! But it would be impossible to wear these in the summer months! You'd roast if you get the flannel ones. And this is hands-down the low-down on how these flannel-type dresses fit!

A flattering but modest dress. I love it. Have it in two colors and would have bought the navy had it been available in my size. Please bring this one back in more colors and especially prints.

Great style!
I LOVE this dress. It runs true to size and drapes very nicely. I got so many compliments when I wore it that I returned to buy the blue stripe version. I was sad to see that my size had sold out. Can you get more JPeterman? I highly recommend this figure flattering dress.
