Al was a merchant marine. Volunteered in 1941 when he was 25 years old, married with two young children.
Not many remember, but during World War II, the merchant marines suffered the highest casualty rates. It was no secret, either; men knew it before they volunteered.
Al worked on an unarmed freighter for four years, carrying gasoline into theaters of war. Other ships refused to caravan near them. I am proud to present this shirt to you; it’s his favorite.
