Sporting Life at Lake Como.

In Milan, they wear silk suits to board meetings and everyone calls them “signore.”

At the fishing lodge near Lake Como, they rough it in luxurious plaid shirts and go by their nicknames—Pippo, Big Fig, and Spider.

Pippo leads the way up a crunchy gravel path to an apparently modest log cabin in the pines. “Here, Peterman,” he assures me, “one can live like a man.”

The space inside is startling, almost vast…high beamed ceiling with a stuffed hawk on a rafter, glowing pine walls hung with crossbows, English shotguns, Scottish split-bamboo fishing rods and boars’ heads, a large rough-cut stone fireplace with an ancient black iron roasting spit.

Big Fig opens the door of an old handcarved walnut cabinet, takes out a box of Cohibas and bottle of Jack Daniels, puts them down on the polished top.

“Tonight,” Spider announces, “is poker night.”

He extracts the cork from the bottle and tosses it ceremoniously into the fireplace.

All in all, I think I was lucky to get off with being nicknamed “Horse.”

Nice, very heavy wool shirt
Great for snow country and cold extreme Northern California nights. Wear a tee under it. . Not a shirt for sensitive skin, a bit scratchy. Well made.
