Last Chance Dept.
Tiny mountainside town of Izushi, away from the clatter and lights of Singapore.
In her family’s shop behind the clock tower, Ayaka shows me her most beautiful ogi, Japanese folding fans her family has been handcrafting for half a century.
“Would you like to buy some of our beautiful fans, Peterman-san?” She flutters one of the fans just below her eyes, peeking out over top of it. “Ogi were highly prized in Japan’s imperial courts, you know.”
I examine the beautiful, delicate print, thinking how lovely it looks against Ayaka’s alabaster skin.
“I have a better idea.”
