Irish Sweater.

On March 12, 1961, the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem performed for 14 minutes in front of 80 million people on the Ed SullivanShow. The rest, as they say, is history.

Here’s the back story: Yes, they wore the traditional Irish cable knit sweaters that would become their trademark. A gift from Mother Clancy, worried about her boys in the cold North American winters.

What many people don’t know is that she also sent a special one just for Diane Hamilton, the American woman who introduced Tommy Makem to Liam Clancy. Without Ms. Hamilton, one of the best Irish groups in history may have never met.

The Irish Cable Knit Sweater (No. 3580). Made of soft, Merino wool. Ours comes from Ireland, too. Traditional stitches include diamonds (for success and wealth), cable (for fisherman’s rope), moss (for rich and abundant growth), and trellis (representing the small stone-walled fields of West Ireland).

Wonderfully long, comes to the knee.

Wide shawl collar with a single button on the left shoulder.

Warm, feminine, and wonderful.

Women’s sizes: XS, S, M, L, XL.

Color: Ecru.

Ireland.
