The Madras Shirt.

(without it, the population of Madras might be 643 instead of 4,636,000.)

Madras may be safely described as “three months of hot, nine months of hotter.”

Remedies for beastly weather exist, but none more portable, none cooler, none more elegant or lighthearted than a Madras Shirt from Madras.

(Curious, isn’t it, the hotter the climate, the hotter the food? Try vindaloos.)

When the English first arrived, centuries ago, the natives of Madras were observed immunizing themselves against the climate with a diet of naranga curry, made with 25 dry chilies and six green ones. The English, who valued their lips, declined.

The British Raj instead bumbled around briefly with pith helmets, soaking them in water first thing each morning hoping for an evaporative updraft.

No wonder they lost India.

Substantial cotton shirt
Purchased two of these shirts and very glad I did. They have many nice features but the cloth is the thing. Many of todays shirts seem to be made of paper. Theses shirts are the real deal Madras from circa 1965. Did I mention I love them and receive comments like where did you get that shirt? frequently. True to size and are made to be worn with jeans or khakis.
