Last Chance Dept.
“It was a wave, an unbelievable mass.” The old distinguished Frenchman laughed, pointing to the old photograph of him that night on Le Bourget Field, hundreds of thousands of people behind him, running in different directions. Chaos. Celebration. The Spirit being carried by hand in the background.
“I look so young.” Emile’s accent is thick. “So present.”
He’s wearing the same silk matka blazer he wore in the photo, I’m sure of it.
I’m in Dunkirk today, meeting with him by chance, accident really — which piqued my curiosity... this photograph in his blazer pocket, just by chance, like I bet it is on most days of his long life.
May 28, 1927 meant a lot to him.
