Last Chance Dept.
There’s a charming, yet totally unspectacular bar on Partition Street in the village of Saugerties. Some might call it a bit dangerous. Most days it’s locals. On certain evenings, you might see a drifter in town for work. Other nights, it’s well-dressed Manhattanites or horse people in town for HITS, the popular equestrian event.
Sometimes it’s a mix.
That’s when it’s really good.
This particular occasion involved three people and a billiards game known as cut throat (yes it’s intense). There was a man in a distressed leather jacket with elbow patches, a fellow named Donald who was a bit rough around the edges, and the female bartender who, as it turns out, was very good at pool. On several occasions, Donald was a bit loud and out of line. Our guy in the distressed leather jacket had the calming effect of a man, say 6 feet 4 inches and 235 pounds. No need to say much to keep everything in order. Men like this tend to wear things unexpected.
The bartender ended up winning and went back behind the bar.
Donald went back to speaking at levels on par with shouting.
The man in the leather jacket left in his 1963 Bentley S3 Continental.
