In 1901, the English disdained submarines (Admiral Wilson believed gentlemen fought face to face). French disdained the English, who still hated the French for starting the Hundred Years’ War.
But on a cold morning in December, French president Émil Loubet boarded the first French submarine in this classic English camel hair shirt and these proper English herringbone pants.
The irony of his fashion astounded even his supporters.
No historian has ever explained it. The 266-ton Gustav Zede was 60 feet long, jammed with 45 Frenchmen and Emil, dressed like a dashing Englishman ready for morning horse ride across his 450-acre stonefenced estate.
You just had to be there.
