Springtime in Nashville, 1967. She was singing that day at the Ryman (before it was redone). Scent of honeysuckle outside.
I can still feel it: her voice cutting clear through those parts of me that didn’t yet understand the soul in country music.
She wore a relaxed, feminine plaid shirt like this one. Didn’t like to look like she was trying too hard (no shoes, either).
Last year, at a little estate sale in Hillsboro, I saw this and remembered. (Luckily, the hipsters there were more interested in the locally sourced burritos.)
What do you remember about that spring?
America’s Sweetheart Shirt (No. 4237). Yarn-dyed plaid in 100% cotton. Pointed collar. Shell buttons at center front, front pockets and adjustable cuffs. 1" grosgrain ribbon (antique white) at neckline and left front placket. Inverted pleat at center back. Sleeve tabs and button. Wear the sleeves rolled up and imagine yourself strumming the autoharp onstage.
Women’s sizes: 0 through 20.
Colors: Watermelon Plaid, Blue Plaid.
