America’s Sweetheart.

Springtime in Nashville, 1967. She was singing that day at the Ryman (before it was redone). Scent of honeysuckle outside.

I can still feel it: her voice cutting clear through those parts of me that didn’t yet understand the soul in country music.

She wore a relaxed, feminine plaid shirt like this one. Didn’t like to look like she was trying too hard (no shoes, either).

Last year, at a little estate sale in Hillsboro, I saw this and remembered. (Luckily, the hipsters there were more interested in the locally sourced burritos.)

What do you remember about that spring?

America’s Sweetheart Shirt (No. 4237). Yarn-dyed plaid in 100% cotton. Pointed collar. Shell buttons at center front, front pockets and adjustable cuffs. 1" grosgrain ribbon (antique white) at neckline and left front placket. Inverted pleat at center back. Sleeve tabs and button. Wear the sleeves rolled up and imagine yourself strumming the autoharp onstage. Made in India.

Women’s sizes: 0 through 20.

Colors: Watermelon Plaid, Blue Plaid.

Small in the shoulders
I ordered an 8, which is my usual size, but it was so small around the shoulders I could barely get into it, let alone out of it. So I returned it for a 10, which fits fine, but seems to be webbed below the armpit, or have very low armpits or something. So if you are at all broad-shouldered for your chest width, or if you like to sometimes raise your arms above shoulder height, either order 2 sizes up or find something else. The shirt is beautiful but very thin and small for the size. I loved the shirt while it lasted, but it's not for anyone who is fully and exuberantly mobile. I jumped off my horse with my hands on the cantle/horn as usual, and it tore in both armpits. Unfortunately I cannot order a 12 in the blue anymore, but I wish I had returned the 10 as well...

I disagree
I found it ran very small. Generally, J. Petermans clothes run a bit large so I bought my correct size and it was way too small. Im returning it.

This is a nice lightweight shirt.
i bought it in pink. The shirt runs true to size. It is very comfortable and very pretty. I wear it with jeans or a denim skirt. It would dress up other skirts too. Recommended.
