Last Chance Dept.
August 18, 1920.
Congress ratifies the 19th amendment allowing women to vote.
Coco tells us to revolt against corsets.
Onward with the liberation movement.
Drop the waist. Nix the hourglass. Chop off the hair. Drink and have sex like a man (whatever that means).
Garçonne means girl who dresses like a boy.
That was the look of the roaring twenties.
Am I wrong to say... meh.
I respect that it was more about liberation from the chains of body image. How those chains have faded from the rear view. Today we celebrate the feminine form. Shape, as they say, is in.
We’re still going to drop the waist but not enough to lose who you are.
After all, there is black silk set against rich velvet.
There is a dropped waist seam that curves upward, making you look endlessly tall.
There is a dramatic sweetheart neckline.
Times, they are changing.
The Fringe Movement.
Madeleine Vionnet must have giggled at the peculiar physics of fringe. Move forward and it moves backward. Move backward and it moves forward. Wiggle and it jiggles. How interesting; how bizarre; this kinesis of fringe.
