Gibson Girl.

She flowed out of Charles Dana Gibson’s illustration pen in the early 1890s, “The American Girl to All the World.”

Confident. Shapely. Upswept hair. Haughty one minute, mischievous the next. She could swing a golf club as well, or better than, her square-jawed male admirers.

In magazines, plays, and songs, her image reproduced endlessly (on chinaware, wallpaper, souvenir spoons, etc.), the Gibson Girl showed two generations of American women how to dress and carry themselves… let them know it was OK to be aware of their power without taking themselves too seriously… until a frantic creature called “the flapper” came onstage.

I’m not saying you have to choose between champagne and bathtub gin. But it’s something to think about.

Gibson Girl Blouse (No. 1105). Pure cotton voile with acres of embroidery, openwork, lace trim and insets on bodice, cuffs, and high collar (can be worn turned down, if you wish).

Hemstitched shoulder seams. Shirred waist with twill tape that ties in back, for peplum effect. Crocheted covered buttons. Button closures on left side, back of collar, and turn-back cuffs. Imported.

Women’s sizes: 0 through 20.

Colors: White.

Needs a ladys maid to get dressed
The black Gibson Girl Blouse is nice but... It is rather sheer in part and you might want to wear a cami or tank underneath. What I was not prepared for was the way it closes. Hidden small buttons go up the side, but then switch to tiny buttons across the shoulder and around the neck to the back. I have trouble buttoning up around my own neck and husbands et al are not usually good with tiny, hidden buttons. A couple of pieces of velcro fasteners would be a great improvement. Or send along a ladys dresser.

Time Out of Mind....
Fit and fabric perfect oodles of lace, embroidery, tiny hidden buttons. Another world, another time. Wonderful with JPs trumpet skirt, but Madelines skirt sets it off in a different way. How can one not recommend it?

A wonderful find
Ive been looking for a Gibson girl blouse for quite some time. This is exactly what I was looking for. It runs true to size and I love the material. I bought it in white. I have worn it with JPs English Trumpet Skirt, and it makes quite a statement! I look forward to wearing it with other skirts and pants. Im considering buying the black one as well. Great job JP!
