You don't have one? Try looking in the attic first.

No? Try the trunk of your father's 1932 Auburn V-12 Boattail Speedster.

Nothing? Well, maybe this one will do (sans the European hotel stickers).

In broad daylight you examine it. A beautiful, mellow old leather Gladstone. (That's what they used to call them.) Rather defiantly rugged.

Genuine Gladstone Bag (No. 1006). Rich Brown full-grain cowhide, handsome but meant to be abused. Brass fittings throughout. Cloth-lined. Big enough to swallow a lot, but not too big. Imported.

Dimensions: 9 ½” Wide x 18” Long x 14” Tall. Large outside zipper pocket is 12" and small inside sipper pocket is 6 ¾". Adjustable shoulder strap is 52" in length.

Perfect Weekend Bag
Love my Gladstone worth the money but I did have to make a slight modification: I had two more holes added to each of the two closure straps. Without them, I could never close the bag fully unless it was stuffed to the limit. I get a lot of complements on this bag, especially from people with good taste...

Great bag, but what's inside counts!
It really is a beautiful bag - the leather is simply gorgeous. I just got back from my first of many weekend trips using the bag. It's a good size, definitely roomy enough for a weekend getaway, but not overwhelming. A previous review mentioned the brass hardware didn't match, I think they've either fixed this issue or the reviewer had a defective bag, mine has all the same shiny brass, which goes well with the leather. My only apprehension is the lining of the bag. The description notes the bag is cloth-lined, but the one I received has a black, polyester type material lining the main interior and the pockets. It doesn't have a very nice tactile feel to it. I know I'm being picky, but I was a bit disappointed with that, considering the price.

Love This Bag
I purchased this bag from Peterman about 4 years ago. I was disappointed when it first arrived as the Owner’s Manual artwork shows a dark chocolate color with aged brass hardware. The actual bag looked like the picture on this page a drab matte leather with a too shiny brass latch. I loved the style and size of the bag so I decided to keep it and look for a way to darken it. I finally found this TARRAGO liquid shoe polish which gave it a rich reddish-brown color making the brass hardware stand out. Now the bag looks great. I get complements at airports and hotels. I’ve carried it on several world trips and it’s now looking even better with age. Just wish they would have made the shiny brass latch the same matte brass tone as the rest of the hardware. This bag is strong, well made and will last a lifetime if properly taken care of. That said, it is on the heavy side coming in at about 8 pounds. So add a couple of pants, shirts, toiletries and such and you’re carrying around a 20-25 pound bag around the endless airport concourses. Still, it’s my favorite bag and I take it with me whenever I can. Oh, and kudos to Peterman for finally posting actual pictures of the items on the website where the Owner’s Manual only has artwork.

Another quarter century
I purchased my first Gladstone in '92. It took a beating and got better looking with age. (I had to replace the lining twice. Once because of a tear, the second in an Absinthe related incident.) The bag is deceptively roomy, indestructible and fits nicely in the plane overhead. Unfortunately, the bag was lost a few months back in a cross country trip. Needless to say, I've just ordered a replacement. Few things, including wives, will stay with you for 25 years.

Old Faithful 30 years strong!
Been a great summer. Two weeks in Newport, RI (Chowda!), Labor Day Weekend in Durango, CO (ride the train to Silverton!), and last night made reservations for an extended weekend in San Diego in a couple of weeks. This Gladstone Bag is indestructible. If fits nicely in airplane overhead compartments. Its made to be thrown or stuffed into the rear of the station wagon (or todays SUV). Offers just enough space for the weekend getaway. It has a panache all its own. Only issue is that Ive lost the tiny set of keys so Im not able to lock it. Because this is my carry on its not typically a problem. Wish I had another set of keys though.
