I'm lost in this Appalachian forest; cold, dark, broken compass, old horse, older guide (who I think may actually be mute). He hasn't spoken once all day... has on a great hunting vest, though.

"Sorry." I smile, poking at the fire. "You want to take point, I..."

"Nah," he mumbles, snapping up his vest. "America was born of no theorist's dream; it wasn't carried in the Susan Constant to Virginia, nor in the Mayflower to Plymouth. It came stark and strong out of the American forest, gaining new strength each time it faced a new frontier."

He nods, going back to brushing his horse.
