The fox sign has been used since the late fifteenth century, and though disappearing from urban areas in recent years, is still common in the country. In a nation so devoted to sport, it is natural that the subject is well used on inn signs. It appears in a great many places, including at Frandley, Cheshire, which has these words: "Behold the fox, near Frandley stocks,/ Pray catch him when you can,/ For they sell here, good ale and beer,/ To any honest man." This sign is believed to come from Dorchester in the beautiful Dorset countryside. The Inn is obviously prepared to accommodate traditional pub games of darts, billiards, and cards.
M & B: Mitchells and Butlers, the leading operator of managed pubs in the UK, founded in 1898.
The Sign is hand painted on metal, one side only, with a wooden frame.
