The Gallic rooster, le coq gaulois, is an unofficial national symbol of France as a nation, depicted here on a mid-19th century fireback. This heavy cast iron fireback was originally used in the rear of the fireplace both to radiate heat back into the room as well as to protect the walls of the firebox. France, Ca. 1860.
