French Sad Iron Heater Stove with Irons. Solid cast iron heater in beautiful condition with elegant castings on the legs comes with five sad irons. The sad is an old term for solid, heavy, or dense….hence “sad iron.” The heater stove accommodates the five sad irons, the idea being that while one iron is in use there are others being heated. Most households had a heater for one or two additional irons. A model such as this one would have come for a large household with servants or even a commercial establishment.

The heater has a warming surface or hot plate for a water jug. It was fueled with wood or charcoal and has the original pull-out ash pan. Most have been cast in foundries centered in the Ardennes region of France, the probable source for this stove. France, Ca. 1880.
