19th Century French Chenets. An exceptional pair of wonderfully casted solid brass andirons topped with urn finials. For centuries, these hard working tools held logs in place and kept the home fires burning. There was a period in France, however, when they gained unexpected cachet as an adornment to a room, tantamount to "jewelry for a room." The fireplace had evolved to be the focus of the best rooms in the house, and fireplace equipment such as this brass pair, caught the firelight and riveted the eyes. The unusual double shanks have a cast iron log stop. France, Ca. 1890.
Urn Andirons (No. C613). Dimensions: 13"H x 6.75"W x 19"D, 10.5"W including double shank. Shipping $25.
