Coat-of-Arms Fireback.

A fireback is literally a solid piece of metal placed against the back wall of the fireplace in order to protect the masonry and reflect heat back into the room. Now, in addition to use in fireplaces, they can also be used as stone wall ornamentation, an interesting decorative touch either way.

This large and very heavy cast iron fireback has an intricate and very detailed coat-of-arms, military in feel, and is surmounted by a cock, the symbol of France. Ca. 1890.
