Cooper’s Fastening Blade.

Fastening blade or “Asse de Rabattage.” This cooper’s or cellarer’s “Herminette” with its curved and hand forged steel blade and wooden handle was used as a lever to raise a hard wooden stopper or bung from the barrel, used to straighten the bung, and to finish the groove with a precise cut for the placement of the iron hoops. The prominent hammer side was used to pound the iron hoops down around the wooden staves.
