The elephant in the middle ages was nearly always represented with a castle on its back and appears as such on inn signs. The Company of Cutlers, the trade group for metal workers based in Sheffield, England, frequently used the Elephant & Castle as their sign, adopting it in reference to the ivory used in its trade for such things as knife handles. The Elephant and Castle is also a major road intersection in Central London, and is used for the name of the surrounding area as well. This extra large sign is hand painted on two sides with wooden frame.
