The Derby

The English Derby, popularly known as the English Derby and internationally known as the Epsom Downs, is the subject of this pup sign. The hand painted portrait of a Derby official, the first of whom was Sir Charles Burnbury who conceived of the Derby in 1779. Also shown is the motto “Honi soit qui mal y pense” which appears on a representation of the garter surrounding the shield of the Royal coat of arms of the United Kingdom. The Bass Brewery was founded in 1777 by William Bass in Burton upon Trent. It is hand painted and signed buy the artist R. Kitchen; two sides with wood frame.
