Royal Oak. Second most popular name after the Red Lion. In the 1980’s there were more than 500 pubs bearing the name. The origin of the name dates to Charles II who hid from noon until dusk in the Boscobel Oak, near Shifnal, Salop in order to escape from the Roundhead soldiers who were pursuing him. Charles had just suffered defeat at the Battle of Worcester, 1651. After the restoration of Charles II to the throne in 1660 it was declared that May 29, the king’s birthday, should henceforth be celebrated as Royal Oak Day, as an act of thanksgiving. This spectacular three dimensional sign is double sided and framed.
