Church bells and hand bells are those mainly referred to in pub signs. Either may be specified by number as in Four Bells. There is little wonder that signs with bells are popular since apart from their distinctive sound, they have a conveniently distinctive, yet simple shape that greatly appealed to sign makers. Most towns with a cathedral, abbey, or great parish church have an inn with bell in its name. This one from Woodborough, a village in Northhamshire, England. Hand painted, double sided with frame top and bottom.
